These days, dining out is rarely just about the food. The scene, the socializing, and the sense of a special event are equally important. When done right, a restaurant’s design enhances all of these elements. A simple meal seems that much more appetizing when paired with appealing furniture, luxurious finishes, and alluring lighting. When tasked with creating such statement spaces, a little extra drama or a few theatrical flourishes, which could be too overpowering for a residential dining room, are almost always welcome.
This project was done to present a uniquely Indian setting in Philadelphia to complement the cuisine. The client specifically requested that all elements inside the establishment reflect the rich spirit of Indian culture. This Indian restaurant offers a spirited take on Indian colonial architecture, focused through a contemporary lens. The abundance of curtains combined with filigrees on walls seeks to be reminiscent of old Indian durbars. The design remains true to its Indian roots while not seeming insular to the western influence that surrounds it.
